A Conference with associated Field Excursions, Community Exhibition and Workshop

will take place in

Hotel Westport

Westport, County Mayo

Friday 6th October to Sunday 8th October 2000

The Mayo through the Millennia Conference will introduce the landscape and settlement history of County Mayo. Presentations will be made on six themes by speakers drawn from palaeo-environmental studies, archaeology, geophysics, history, museums, documentary archives and conservation.

  • Throughout the conference Local Community Groups and Heritage Societies will display material reflecting Mayo's rich heritage through a unique exhibition entitled "The Mayo Heritage Wall".
  • The community theme will be further developed by a Workshop and Exhibition Session on Sunday afternoon at which representatives of relevant State Agencies will discuss their role and function in the provision of information and support to local communities.
  • For those who are interested in exploring some local history, there will be three field excursions to local heritage sites hosted by Westport Historical Society and the Irish Association for Quaternary Studies (IQUA).
  • A Conference Dinner followed by a traditional music session, on Saturday night, will offer an opportunity to socialise. The conference after-dinner speaker will be Professor Seamus Caulfield.
