"The Mayo Heritage Wall"

Local communities in County Mayo have been involved in the collection of local heritage information for a number of years, largely under the auspices of FÁS funded Community Employment and Community Response Schemes. It is proposed to involve and encourage local community groups interested in local heritage through holding an Exhibition and Workshop. All community groups within the County are being invited to either contribute to the Mayo Heritage Wall Exhibition or attend the Conference and Exhibition.

The Mayo Heritage Wall will be displayed in the Conference Hall for the duration of the Mayo through the Millennia Conference.

The main features of the Exhibition will be:

  • Community Groups, Youth and Women's Groups, Mayo Archaeological and Historical Societies, Local Museums, etc. throughout County Mayo active in researching and promoting the heritage of their areas will provide "bricks" for the Mayo Heritage Wall Exhibition.
  • "Bricks" will comprise of an A1 (84 cm x 59 cm) display/story board made up of text, photographs, graphics, etc. on the "heritage" of a specific area or topic.
  • Each exhibitor will be confined to providing a maximum of 2 "bricks" for the exhibition.
  • "Heritage" will include Landscape, Geology, Archaeology, History, Folklore, Music, and Dance etc. Content will be non-commercial.
  • The exhibition will be put on display for the duration of the conference using the walls of the Conference room.
  • A map of Mayo showing the location of heritage sites/work on display will provide an index to the Exhibition
  • Facilities will also be provided to display Mayo heritage-related websites.
  • Westport Historical Society will host a stand for the display and sale of Society and Community produced pamphlets, books, journals and videos. Any group who wish to participate should contact Clew Bay Heritage Centre.

After the Conference contributions to the Mayo Heritage Wall Exhibition will be eligible for inclusion in this website, provided they are submitted in a suitable format.


Community Workshop

The Community Workshop will take place on Sunday, October 8th, commencing at 14.00 hours.

A number of National Agencies that are relevant to community-based heritage studies will also have stands in the exhibition area to outline the services and support available to communities. On Sunday afternoon, October 8th, personnel from these agencies will make short presentations on the work of their respective organisations in the County. This will encourage networking between the communities and support agencies and will lead to a better understanding of agency roles, available resources and information.

All Community Groups, Youth and Women's Groups, Mayo Archaeological and Historical Societies, Local Museums within Mayo are invited to attend the Community Workshop.

Admission to the Community Workshop is free.

The Mayo through the Millennia Conference was organised by The Archaeological and Historical Societies of Mayo. It was grant aided by the Heritage Council and supported by Mayo County Council, FÁS, Mayo Naturally, Meitheal Mhaigheo, NUI Galway and Westport UDC.
